help
We have chosen this design on which to base our site because it was simple, clean, easy to use and navigate and fast to load. We done our best to make this site as easy to use and navigate as possible and we hope that you will enjoy your stay here.
Behind the simple interface, the pages included in this web site contain functionality that is meant to make your stay easier, nicer and more enjoyable.
The paragraphs below provide a description of the main features included in our web site and information on how to use them.
A few clear colors, large font and simple pages
This web site is specifically designed to avoid the most cardinal sin anyone could make when creating a web site: pages that contain too many colors and that are cluttered with content occupying any available pixel.
We have also used a relatively large font that will save our users a few visits to the... eye doctor. This site is tailored around the Candara font for Windows Vista users and the Trebuchet MS font found in almost all the lower versions of Windows.
Believe us, it was extremely difficult to avoid becoming more complex but we hope that we have managed to achieve our goal.
Links
Links are marked by a dotted line such as for example the one here that will bring you back to the same page.
The color might be different but when you see a dotted line under a word, it means that this is a link.
Navigation
This site is structured in three layers.
The first page where all the indexing of the available articles is done, a second layer where all the articles can be found and a subsequent page where the article is displayed. You can use the navigation menu as displayed in Figure 1, that is present on all pages, to go back to the first page of our web site where you can make another selection, if you wish.
You can use the same menu to access the Help page when you need more information.
We have always believed that the navigation of any web site should be simple and clear to everyone even if this means that the user might have to click a few times more to navigate all the available pages.
As a good friend of ours says, 'One man's clever solution, is another man's irritation'.
Image display
We have some really cool effects on our site: just click on any image link and you will see what I mean.
When the first image appears you can:
See which image in the page you have opened by the caption, i.e. IMAGE 2 OF 16.
Go forward by hovering with your mouse over the right-hand side of the image. When the option NEXT appears click to continue to the next image. Obviously this does not apply to the last image within a page. You can do the same by clicking the N key on your keyboard.
Go backwards by hovering with your mouse over the left-hand side of the image. When the option PREV appears click to go back to the previous image. This does not apply to the first image within a page. You can do the same by clicking the P key on your keyboard.
You can close the image display by clicking on the CLOSE option or by clicking on the C key on your keyboard.
Text annotation and display
As you probably have already noticed, articles are presented on different pages than the navigation-oriented pages of the site. We have made this choice due to the large amount of text that some articles include and in order to avoid very long pages.
In addition to this, our users have indicated that pages with a slightly wider text are more pleasant to read.
Within some articles you might notice text that is selected in this manner. Such annotation indicates text that is important to the essence of the article in order to draw the user's attention.
Offline viewing and printing
Offline viewing and printing are extremely important to many users, especially the ones of er... a somewhat more advanced age. Many users do not like having to spend hours in front of a screen when they can be sitting comfortably on their couch drinking a cup of coffee.
Therefore, offline viewing and printing are facilities that should be present in any web site.
To enable users to view and print our pages offline, we have chosen to provide copies in PDF format (or Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format). In a few cases where users might want to further work with our copies, we have chosen to provide copies in DOC format (or Microsoft Word format). When downloads are available, these are provided in the ZIP format (can be opened with Winzip and many other applications).
Please note that the Word documents included in this site are based on the Candara font by Microsoft.
When you see the icons
or
this means that you can download the respective article as a document in the format indicated by the icon.
The icon
is a link that will lead to a download in the ZIP format that contains the respective article in both the PDF and DOC format, along with other related files.
Our Usage Agreement covers the use of all the material that is included in our web site.
